PurpleTrain enhances technical infrastructure - improved services for students and staff

With an additional server coming online in September, PurpleTrain will be able to provide even better service for its students.

Faster Access. The two words that are guaranteed to bring a smile to any online students.

PurpleTrain students will now able to gain faster access to the PurpleTrain network upon the completion of the technical upgrade. This will be made possible by the introduction of a new T1 or 512 kbps lease line.

It will also yield other advantages such as less downtime for students. This project was implemented at a cost of $250,000.

Besides such enhanced technical capabilities, other benefits now that the PurpleTrain will operate as an independent infrastructure include enhanced reliability and scalability. Furthermore, system bottlenecks will now be able to identified and overcome more efficiently.

"Previously when problems cropped up, we not only had to deal with it on our side, but as we were riding on the Informatics Group's infrastructure, it meant that there were two tiers to clear before the problem could be solved. We could not resolve issues as quickly as we would like to.

Having our own network infrastructure means that troubleshooting will be easier. We will have direct control of our own system and our own network support, we will be able to respond faster to users' request," said Mr Hilary Pereira, Technical Support Manager.

The new and more robust infrastructure not only means higher performance but also more scalability. The system is structured such that more IP addresses will be able to be added easily for cater for further expansion of our student base.

The benefits of the new system are not restricted solely to students, PurpleTrain staff will also enjoy the benefits of the additional server - the anywhere, anytime concept is reinforced. They will be now be able to dial-in and access their Lotus Notes mail from anywhere outside of work.

" Upgrading our technical capabilities is an on-going process for us. We are always looking to further enhancements to upgrade our systems in order to provide even better service for our students, " added Hilary.
