Taking challenges head-on - Profile of PurpleTrain Sales Manager

" My hobbies and interests are typical of an average Singaporean." That was the comment from PurpleTrain.com Sales Manager, Ms Lee Wan Ling when asked to describe herself. Indeed, her hobbies and beliefs would be a reflection of what we normally see described as Singaporeans' favourite pastimes.

Starting with her love for the movies, where she would watch anything except horror flicks. Then her love of food - a legendary Singaporean trait. Her favourite eating places are the numerous hawker centres around the island. In her words, they serve the "most yummy food and it is cheap too". This avid reader of thrillers, particularly those of John Grisham's and Reader's Digest also reveals another strong Singaporean belief - the importance of the family.

" I realised how important my family was to me when I was studying in Canada. It was not only the fact that being so far away that made me appreciate them more. I also happened to need emergency surgery on my knees when I was there. My mum took leave from work and went over to nurse me. Their concern and the sacrifices that they were willing to make really made an impact on me. That was when I realised that no matter what, my family would always be there for me."

Currently, whatever spare time she has, she spends mostly with her family. The younger of two siblings, she obviously has a special spot for her grandmother and mother.

" Weekends are spent running errands with my family. We also like to spend time together going shopping and eating out. Special moments for me include just flopping onto my mum's bed and talking nonsense with her and my grandmother.

" They have been a constant source of encouragement to me, especially when I first started at PurpleTrain and was trying to learn the ropes. They made me believe that if I knuckled down and gave it my full commitment, I would see results."

Her dedication to her family also extends to her job.

" Wan Ling was one of our top consultants, her record of sales for PurpleTrain products was excellent. She was always tenacious in achieving her goals and most importantly, she also strongly believes in this mode of learning. This plus her highly infectious enthusiasm has enabled her to do well at PurpleTrain - she never says die, " said Mr Raj Singh, Assistant Director. PurpleTrain.com.

Wan Ling started off with the Informatics Computer School, where she gained considerable ground and product experience from two years as a programme executive in the centre.

When asked why she decided to take up the challenging job of leading PurpleTrain sales, she replied : " I knew that it will be a high pressure job when I took up the challenge. However, I strongly believed that we had a good product. It is new and that poses a challenge but it also comes with excellent parentage. E-learning is also an area in education and training that offers great potential for growth. I couldn't ask for a better product to sell.

" Also, PurpleTrain to me represents more than a product. It is introducing people to a new way of learning and there is also the challenge of overcoming certain mindsets that you always encounter when introducing something new. I especially derive satisfaction from knowing that we are helping people embark on a course that could change their lives, that they otherwise would not have done because of work or time constraints.

" It is extremely exciting to be the forefront of a revolutionary way of delivering education. In a way, you can say that we are pioneers. The idea of rolling out PurpleTrain to more countries and opening up potential markets that are new to the concept of e-learning is also very exciting. "

For Wan Ling, job satisfaction also comes from setting goals and achieving them: " Right now, my goal is to help PurpleTrain grow to achieve its full potential. I really think that it is already well on its path to being a world-class online e-learning portal. I am proud to be part of the team that will make it happen !"
