Discussion Rooms - Most Popular Interaction Tool On PurpleTrain

PurpleTrain provides three key tools to enhance the learning process of the students, primarily discussion rooms, chat sessions and private email facility. These tools provide a platform through which students and facilitators can interact freely with each other and share their knowledge and views on the subjects.

Unlike face-to-face interaction in class-based, these online tools are virtual, hence actually encouraging students to be more expressive and less inhibited in voicing their doubts. As one facilitator, Dr Krishnamoorthy pointed out, ?Students will actually keep asking questions until they fully comprehend the topics and until their doubts are clarified. So they are actually more inquisitive and determined about learning.?

We found that among the three interaction tools, the most popular facility is the discussion rooms. The discussion room is favoured for its flexibility, as students can post up their queries or uncertainties on the subject at hand and the facilitator will reply to the posted question within 24 hours. Facilitators also utilise the discussion room to post questions to the students to encourage participation and discussions among the students. Students can then view the replies from the facilitators later on by checking the discussion room whenever they are free.

In fact, the students have even taken it one step further by discussing the topics among themselves while waiting for the facilitator?s reply. This is clearly exemplified by some students below, from the final year course from University of Portsmouth, UK for IT350 Distributed Networks module:

That's how we config our routers for web and email in the office. All ICMP packets are block to prevent attack to some extend. Most of the unused ports are closed as well. It is fun to play with router. :)
