We Change For The Better
Elective Modules Introduced For BSc In Computing Programmes

Good news to all the existing as well as the future to be students of BSc (Hons) in Computing from the University of Portsmouth (UOP), UK. Starting from 13 August onwards, students can opt for their favourite subjects instead of following the previous system where all are required to complete seven (7) compulsory modules in order to graduate.

Previously, all students are required to complete six units and one project (all are compulsory). Now, students are only required to complete one core module, namely, IS352 System Development and are given a range of seven modules to choose from in order to complete the course.

So, how does this system works? Well, under the new system, students will be measured based on the credit hours accumulated during course period. In other words, Students who have successfully achieved 120 credit hours will graduate and be awarded BSc (Hons) in Computing by University of Portsmouth.

The newly introduced structure therefore offers the students the flexibility in choosing their favorite subjects. For those who do not like to do a project, they can now skip the module but still earn a degree.

In addition to the above, this programme has also incorporated E-Commerce in its latest course structure. Let's hear what our Course Leader, Ms Preethi Kesavan has to say.

"As in every aspect of life, students and all must be prepared for a change. E-commerce is all about constant stimulation and learning. In the advent of the internet in 1960's, we have seen a dramatic change in the way businesses were run. The convergence of commerce and internet technology has proven to be a boon for consumers and businesses alike. E-commerce transcends all boundaries and has become an integral aspect in the delivery of services to customers. The benefits brought about by e-commerce will likely to continue, and perhaps in the future e-commerce will be even more beneficial to those who choose to take advantage of it. As such, the introduction of E-Commerce into the existing programme structure is just timely to equip our students of today to fit into the relevant skills and knowledge base for the digital economy of the near future. The course is designed for this retrospective view of this objective and to achieve the necessary fundamental," said Ms Kesavan who is also the Team Manager, Graduate Studies Department.

Aside from the above stated, IT355 Object-Oriented Programming & Design, which was run previously on C++ language will now replaced by Java, a programming language expressly designed to have the "look and feel" of the C++ language, but it is simpler to use and enforces an object-oriented programming model. Java can be used to create complete applications that may run on a single computer or be distributed among servers and clients in a network.

Last but definitely not the least, starting from 2002 onwards, students will be able to take two modules concurrently per term. This will certainly shorten the course duration to a minimum period of 8 months, from its existing one year duration.
