The Wonders of e-Learning

Still shaky about taking a course totally online? Hear what Mohsin and Rabia, two siblings from Pakistan, have to say on their e-learning experience with PurpleTrain.com.

Rabia Iqbal, 21, Teaching Assistant (right)
Studied the same course and completed the course at same time. Earned an Advanced Diploma in Computer Studies from Informatics, Lahore, Pakistan in April 2000 and subsequently signed up for PurpleTrain’s online programme, Bachelor of Science (Hons) Computing by University of Portsmouth, UK. Completed the course in April this year.

Mohsin: “I believe this is a record in PurpleTrain.com that a brother and sister took the same course at a time and completed it at the same time . And I hope this will add more confidence in other people, especially for those who are still shaky about e-learning.

“To me, e-Learning is the future. That’s what makes me signed up for PurpleTrain’s online programme one year ago without hesitation. I wanted to try this new mode of learning and at the same time experience the dynamic field of the Internet world and to feel the power of telecommunication.

“Believe it not, I managed to score an ‘A’ for my final year project (PJ330). It has helped me to earn a degree, which is acceptable worldwide from the University of Portsmouth, UK. This prestigious degree, BSc (Honours) in Computing, has indeed opened up a new academic and career pathway for my future advancement. I can now apply for further studies i.e. Master’s in the same university or with other universities from UK, which is a great thing. Besides, it has also equipped me with the necessary skills required into any IT related professions. I was offered a job as a Junior Software Engineer immediately after I have completed this programme.

“Right from the very first day of my e-learning programme I felt as if I was in an absolute utopia. No longer do I have to rush for a class session or accommodate my tight schedules to fit into others timetable for a discussion session. With e-learning, I can study at my own way and learn at my own pace. I will never miss a class, as the chat log will always be there for my easy reference and revision. In other words, it provides me the flexibility of doing things the way I wanted to without disrupting my existing schedule. It’s so user friendly and therefore help me to manage my daily life more efficiently.

“I intend to study further. I would definitely go for Master and then a PhD programme in computer science. Most likely I will take courses specializing in Software Design and Architecture.”

Rabia: “The things that I like most about e-learning is its mode of delivery which allows free flow of information amongst course-mates and facilitators. Therefore serving as a platform that maximizes effective communications across the board.

“From my observation so far, I would say that students tend to be more restricted and concerned about the questions raised in a traditional taught class mode as compared to online learning. The psychology that they are being watched and observed by others some how creates an illusion that it’s smarter to keep quite rather to speak out to reveal one’s stupidity.

“I feel comfortable with e-learning because it gives me more confidence in asking questions and brings me closer to my classmates and facilitators from around the world. It has broadened my horizons and enabled me to view things from different perspectives.

“The best thing about e-learning is that I can access the cyber classroom from anywhere in the world. I do not have to be there physically but are still able to gain access to all the information and course materials with just a click of a mouse. It is more time saving and cost effective in the long run.
