University wins Science Research Investment Fund Award

The University has recently been awarded funding of £2m under the Government's Science Research Investment Fund (SRIF). Over £1m of this will be used to support research in the Biosciences, an area where the University of Portsmouth has a world class reputation.

Professor Geoff Kneale, of the School of Biological Sciences and director of the Institute of Biomedical and Biomolecular Sciences says "Instrumentation for Scientific Research is advancing at a rapid rate and it is vital that we invest in the latest technology to keep ahead of the field. This government initiative will give a tremendous boost to our research, providing us with a state-of-the-art high powered laser microscope, equipment for analysing minute quantities of DNA, instrumentation for determining the size and shape of very large molecules found in living cells and sophisticated computer equipment for bioinformatics research."

The equipment will support ongoing research into the way that life develops from a single cell, how genes are switched on and off in cells, and the molecular basis of diseases such as cancer, cystic fibrosis and muscular dystrophy.

Although intended primarily for research, the new facilities will undoubtedly enhance the experience of graduate and undergraduate students in all areas of the biosciences at Portsmouth.
