What exactly is an Associate Degree?

The term “Degree” sounds familiar to us. However, the term “Associate Degree” may not be familiar to many. What exactly is an “Associate Degree”? What role does it play in the US Education System?

The Associate Degree is basically a two-year “pre-degree” course offered to provide an alternative to the traditional four-year bachelor’s degree programmes, providing an opportunity to high quality post-secondary studies and an “interim” qualification for individuals who may not want to continue their education and obtain a degree. Most Associate Degrees are offered at junior colleges and community colleges.

However, it is important to note that obtaining an associate degree is not equivalent to obtaining a four-year bachelor’s degree. Graduates with an Associate Degree can choose to proceed to further their study by moving on to the 3rd and 4th year of a Bachelor degree or Baccalaureate at Universities in which they receive priority admission.

Then, the impending question is: “Why should I take an Associate Degree when I can go straight to a 4-year bachelor’s degree?” The simple answer to the question is “TIME” and “AFFORDABILITY”. A student needs only 2 years to complete their Associate Degree and with that qualification, they can decide on their next move in terms of either joining the industry to start their career or to continue to study for a Bachelor Degree with given exemptions as an Associate degree graduate.

Alternatively, the Associate Degree is chosen because it is considered to be more affordable as compared to a 4-year degree programme. Students can stop at the Associate Degree level if they have budget constraints and with an associate degree graduate status, they can get a good job with a good pay package. Of course, in today’s knowledge-based economy and the constant pursuit of lifelong learning, Associate Degree graduates would generally progress to the 3rd and 4th year of the Bachelor Degree so as to be conferred a “Degree Graduate” status.

With the many advantages of the Associate Degree, PurpleTrain.com has recently entered into a partnership with Salem International University (West Virginia, USA) to launch the Associate of Science in Information Technology and Business Management programme which provide advance standing exclusively for Informatics’ Diploma, Higher Diploma and Advanced Diploma students in Computer Studies and Business Administration.

With this new US degree completion pathway, Informatics’ Computer Studies/Business Administration graduates have the opportunity and advantage of a well-rounded education with Salem International University, helping them soar to even greater heights in their career paths.
