Certification gives affirmation to aspiration
Information technology jobs easier
to find for those who complete accreditation programmes
|
After graduating with a film degree from UC Berkeley in December
1999, Gerald Fontejon realized that a career path in movies could
be a long and arduous road. So the 26-year-old San Franciscan set
his sights on finding a job "where I could learn something
new and earn decent money."
He shoved his film degree aside and signed up for computer classes
at the University of California at Berkeley Extension in
hopes of entering the booming information technology profession.
Four months later, he earned a certificate in computer information
systems and almost immediately landed a job as a UNIX administrator
for startup Zip Realty in May 2000.
The growing need for computer tech support has driven people from
former cooks to film students into the IT field. But as the job
market continues to tighten, IT professionals are finding that possessing
a certificate as proof of their expertise sets them apart in an
applicant pool.
The IT training and testing industry is expected to reach
$4.1 billion by 2003, according to a study by International Data
Corp.
