"You must be self-discipline and never procrastinate. Always follow the guidelines given and at the same time adopt critical and creative thinking and make full use of this web-based training," said Heriyanto Lai, one of the PurpleTrain's e-learners who has excelled in class.

Out of the 198 graduates who have crowned achievements in e-learning recently, two graduated with a First Class Honours Degree. Heriyanto is one of them. This turned out to be the biggest surprise, as he never thought that he would be one. He attributed his success to his family for being supportive, understanding and encouraging in his course of study and to his facilitators (lecturers) for their time and relentless efforts in giving invaluable advice and assistance, unerring clues and academic supports.

"I greatly appreciate the help and contribution from PurpleTrain's staff for making e-learning a success. I also wish to thank my classmates and friends who had spent the time together in our routine discussion for the completion of this course," he further added.

When asked to compare the traditional taught mode learning to online learning, the 24-year-old Indonesian born Chinese said: "e-Learning is cost-effective and very flexible. Based on my experience as an e-learner, learners are very active during class sessions and in discussion rooms. They tend to be more open up in expressing their thoughts, exchanging ideas and experiences. Ideas are shared freely amongst learners and facilitators, thus making learning more exciting and fruitful."

In fact, Heriyanto shared the same experience as most of our e-learners do. He said: "E-learning has enhanced and enriched my learning experience."

In a recent interview with PurpleTrain.com, Heriyanto talked about his likes and dislikes, his achievements and future planning.

Extracted below is the gist of the interview.

PT: What do you like most about e-Learning?

I like Bulletin Board the most as this is where idea sharing takes place. I can post my questions whenever I've one and can expect a reply within 24 hours from the other learners/facilitators. I like the fact that responses from the facilitators and PT personnel are considerably fast. Therefore, decrease your turn-around time and increase your overall academic performance/productivity.
However, there are also some occasions where unclear explanation were given. Under such circumstances, I would usually try to do my own research and then seek clarification from other course-mates and facilitators.

PT: Why did you choose this course? What is your favourite subject & why?

BSc (Hons) in Computing is one of the prestigious programmes offered by the University of Portsmouth, one of the leading universities in UK.

This course covers the entire computing concept in depth, especially in the analysis, design, and implementation. This UK degree is widely recognised as well. That's why I chose this course.

My favourite subject is PJ330 (Final year project) as it allows me to apply and implement what I had learned in class and therefore exposes me to the real world. It gives me the greatest satisfaction compared to other subjects.

PT: What did you enjoy the most at class?

I really enjoy the chat session, as you can expect active participation and interactions between learners and facilitator. Problems are solved immediately with the fast response from participants. Most of my questions for the lessons are clarified here.

Even if I missed a scheduled chat session, I can still view the chat log which is always available on the web. Thus, allowing me to go through the topics that has been discussed without missing a single point. I found that the retention rate is higher when compared to the traditional taught mode learning, which I used to attend in the past.

PT: How would you grade the usefulness of the chat sessions/discussion rooms/emails?

Chat Session : Very Good
Discussion rooms : Very Good
Emails : Good

PT: How e-Learning through PurpleTrain.com has affected your life? How did you benefit from e-Learning?

I found myself more discipline and independent. E-Learning has given me invaluable experience which will certainly help in my future career advancement.

PT: How easy is making friend?

Making friend is not as easy as saying "Hello". I think communications is very important. Mutual understanding and respect for each other are the key to long lasting friendship and relationship. In reality, people may take advantage of the friendship, but a real friend is the one who gives you helping hands when you are in need.

PT: Would you recommend your friends/families/colleagues/neighbours to take this course & why?

Yes, I would recommend people to take this course as the benefits that I have gained from e-learning is tremendous. In addition, computing course is one of the most demanding in this new IT era.

Heriyanto is looking forward to attending his graduation ceremony in Singapore this year. "I can't wait to meet my facilitators and classmates who have been with me for the past one year," said Heriyanto in great excitement and anticipation.

Outside study his interests include listening to music, swimming, travelling and programming. Heriyanto is currently looking for an IT related job. He believes that if there is a will, there is a way. Good Luck, Heriyanto!
