According to the results of a survey conducted by the Hong Kong Census and Statistics Department from April to June 2001, there were some 1.26 million households having at least one PC at home at the time when the survey was carried out and this constituted 61% of all the households in Hong Kong. The survey also revealed that among those 1.26 million households having a PC at home, some 1.01 million households had connected their PCs (excluding PDAs) to the Internet accounting 80% of all households in Hong Kong.

In fact, the percentage of persons in Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) having used a PC along with the Internet was the highest among young people in South China, including Taiwan, particularly those of school age. Another recent report conducted by NetValue, the global leading research firm in Jan 2002 indicated males and students aged 15-24 were the two leading Internet users groups of users in Taiwan, Korea and Hong Kong. In fact, the Hong Kong Education Web (HKEW) released a "Survey on Online Learning 2001" last year showed that 11% of the respondents had participated in online courses or courses supplemented by online learning, in which over half of the courses were provided by overseas institutes. The survey also stated that the respondents believed that the three biggest advantages of taking online courses or courses supplemented by online learning were "No need to attend class in fixed venues" (76%), "Greater learning autonomy" (64%) and "time saving" (59%).
