Immersive distance learning, computer-centric school instruction, instant and enterprise-wide corporate training, and the list goes on; it seems e-learning has already become a part of our life while we are busy trying to figure it out.
Based on a survey of 91 managers last year, independent consulting firm Straits Knowledge said that two-thirds of the respondents in Singapore and two-fifths of the respondents in Hong Kong reported having e-learning projects this year.
The rapid growth of e-Learning is propelled by the Internet and the enormous opportunity embedded in global education. Media attention, publics curiosity and the various initiatives by the governments across the region that are looking at e-learning as a means to bridge the digital divide, have made e-Learning a hot topic.
According to estimates from IT consultant, International Data Corporation (IDC), the elearning industry in the Asia Pacific region will double every year in the next one to three years to be worth about USD462 million.
Australia, Korea, China and Singapore are countries that are set to lead the E-learning industry in the Asia Pacific. Corporate training, higher education, and K-12 are three sectors within the industry that hold promise for long-run value creation. Corporate e-learning, in particular, is deemed to be the most well defined market so far. The Singapore civil service generated annual savings of US$9 million in mainly administrative costs when it launched an online exchange for training courses last year. Bolstered by the Singapore government’s enthusiasm, the republic’s e-learning market is looking very rosy.
The benefits of e-learning can be many folds. It is not location specific. Anyone, anywhere with a PC can follow the same training course, without leaving his or her desk. Besides the obvious time and cost savings one could reap by not having to travel, e-learning can provide a more personal training experience as it allows for extreme flexibility in content absorption and collaborative work via e-mail, chat, forums and virtual meetings. Individuals can train in their own time to become more marketable and improve their career prospects, and companies can design customised training courses to extract the best from their employees.
Mr Raj Singh, Acting Executive Director of PurpleTrain sums up the key benefits of e learning, “e-learning enjoys a competitive advantage over traditional learning. Learners can choose to learn at their own pace, enjoy easier access to more learning and spend less time travelling. These are benefits that fit into today’s busy professionals lifestyle, and once they open themselves up to this mode of learning, there is no turning back!”
