The self-directed e-learner

When learners take on the responsibility for their own continuous learning, having control over learning becomes very important. Self-directed learning is a strategy that provides the learner with that control.

Through self-directed learning, learners control:

  1. what they want to learn
  2. how they want to learn and
  3. when they want to learn.

Skills for Self-Directed Learning
The skills shown below should help those interested at being a self-directed learner.

  1. question, inquire, problem solve.
  2. keep an open mind to other points of view.
  3. scan data and quickly choose relevant resources.
  4. collect data on performance through self observation and feedback from others.
  5. assess your present performance using that data.
  6. set goals to improve present performance.
  7. observe and model others' performance to improve.
  8. make a firm commitment to working on goals.
  9. continuous self-motivation.

In 1973, Malcolm Knowles developed some key theories that focused on competencies for Self-Directed Learning in a project. Knowles summarized the skills required for learners to become involved in a self-directed learning project to be as follows:

  1. The ability to develop and be in touch with curiosities. Perhaps another way of describing this skill would be "the ability to engage in divergent thinking."
  2. The ability to formulate questions, based on one's curiosities, that are answerable through inquiry (in contrast to questions that are answerable by authority or faith).
  3. The ability to identify data required to answer the various kinds of questions.
  4. The ability to locate the most relevant and reliable sources of the required data.
  5. The ability to select and use the most efficient means for collecting the required data from the appropriate sources.
  6. The ability to organize, analyze, and evaluate the data so as to get valid answers to questions.
  7. The ability to generalize, apply, and communicate the answers to questions raised.

Students should realize that e-learning calls upon a lot of self discipline to succeed in mastering the course. The above tips should help to concretize what most e-learners have problems with.
