An MBA to go the distance

When you decide to go ahead in your lifelong learning path, as you need the knowledge to seriously prepare yourself for a management career, you should carefully evaluate your needs, goals, time availability, dedication and budget.

Seeking the support and understanding of your family is very important and cannot be taken for granted. For example, if you are married, you may have less time with your spouse, and may have to forgo holidays with your children.

Ultimately, if you decide to pursue your MBA, there’s no better place than Singapore.

As Deputy Prime Minister Dr Tony Tan recently noted, the higher education system here is structured to allow the small population to develop its full potential.

“The existing local and foreign institutions here have evolved to offer a rich buffet of educational services. This provides a firm foundation upon which we all can grow,” Dr Tan said in a Straits Times article.

When taking the leap, don’t neglect to look at the Web-based MBA opportunities. Many are first-rate and usually provide a basic Web curriculum supported by classroom sessions. Their e-learning approach – featuring discussion rooms, chat rooms, textbooks, online practical case studies and private e-mail availability of instructors – is practical for the self-motivated student whose working hours may be erratic or travel schedule unpredictable.

PurpleTrain.com in partnership with Salem International University (SIU) will offer an International MBA programme for busy executives and managers wanting to go the distance with their lifelong learning aims.

There are many benefits of doing an MBA after the getting that basic first degree. Coupled with some years of working experience, an MBA represents an excellent opportunity for middle-level professionals to pursue graduate degree qualifications. In the SIU MBA, participants learn how business and management work in a global environment and it allows the students to pick up valuable insights into the corporate world.

In line with the fast paced business world, the SIU International MBA may be completed in less than two years which allows participants to apply their knowledge in the realm of their corporate world. With the vast potential of the Web, the programme is delivered on-line which offers convenience and ease of access for travelling and busy executives. Study time is entirely flexible and can cater to their own schedules.

Students who will benefit largely from this SIU International MBA programme include middle-level professionals who want to broaden their understanding of how functional areas within a business inter-relate in a global environment. However, that does not mean that the programme is limited to the persons above. Another group of target students who will benefit from the programme are executives and business school graduates who need to update their business skills and education. Experienced professionals who are working in the private or public sector and individuals working in for profit and non-profit organizations can learn how to leverage on these business skills for their organization. A large number of technical professionals wanting to move into management positions who need skills in resource management and global operations can appreciate the knowledge. Last but not least, practising entrepreneurs, small business people, accountants, lawyers, government employees, health care workers, and others responsible for managing their own practices and making sound business decisions are likely candidates as well.

It is understandable that the recognition of an MBA programme is very important to those considering academic advancement. After all, investing time and funds into a programme that is widely recognised pays for itself many times over.

The MBA program is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, (30 N. LaSalle Street, Suite 2400, Chicago, IL 60602-2504; 1-312-263-0456). The University will begin to offer courses in the fall of 2002.

SIU has an international mission and the campus is research centered and multi-cultural with high quality of teaching, scholarship, and individualized attention. The international business practicum is an excellent opportunity for hands-on, practical experience in international business. In addition, SIU has a history of successful student achievement: SIFE (Students for Free Enterprise) and Delta Mu Delta Business Honor Society.

Choosing wisely

It is important to understand that the available programmes in the market also vary greatly in the scope of subjects covered, the intensity of study, method of instruction and course preparation time as well as examinations, term papers and thesis requirements. All these boil down to whether you have the gumption and commitment to make time and effort for your MBA. So choose the one that lets you go the distance.
