An online MBA has its advantages |
Technology has certainly come a long way. It has changed the face of education in many ways. In the initial stage when computers were brought to the hands of students, it made typing up research papers much easier. Carbon copying paper has now virtually become unnecessary. Was it a change for the better? Or, did word processing software make learning less effective?
Typing is a small aspect of what computers have done. Of course, there is the Internet that has allowed us to communicate and spread ideas all across the world. The library is no longer the only place to research. In the near future, even going to the library will become a rare occasion!
As the Internet revolutionises the way we learn with e-learning, even attending college may become a non-campus, less physically interactive experience. Many US and UK universities have began to offer online learning in traditional programmes such as Bachelor, MBA and even doctorate programmes.
MBA through online learning does have its advantages.
- it provides an avenue for busy professionals who cannot spend time sitting in classes.
- navigating the Internet using a web browser, communicating through e-mail, web bulletin boards, chat functions, and utilising the different computer hardware and software can make the MBA students become solidly proficient in the tools being widely used today.
- provides the opportunity for people who cannot get an MBA in their city or country to obtain one without having to move.
Other plus points on an MBA e-learning are it offers the chance to
- 'speak' up for those who would not otherwise talk in class, to feel less inclined to hold back.
- for a normal lecture to actually "extend" so that questions and answers can be exchanged with less time and personality boundaries.
- to study at a pace that suits their needs.
Online learning allows interaction in the electronic way between people. Face-to-face group work is an emphasis in undergraduate business programs so why would it be any less important in the graduate level? Many professionals are doing more business via email and videoconferencing, making online learning programme a great practice arena. Thus, accreditation of the MBA distance learning programs should be a major factor in deciding whether or not the MBA degree is worth its clout. Universities such as University of Wales, Capella University and Salem International University are already offering online MBA programmes that have seen many successful graduates.
Schools that may not have a big name for on-campus learning may be able to emerge by offering quality MBA distance learning programs. Any government support of distance learning may play a big role in the MBA experience as more resources could be available. As other countries enter the distance learning arena, the world could become one big university. Imagine what an international MBA program could do for you!

Concerns in online learning
Ethical issues concerning tests could be a problem but business schools would need to either wholeheartedly trust each applicant and let each individual live up to their own actions or set controls. As in all other things, ethics always comes into play.
Having an MBA degree can provide you with more opportunities in finding that prestigious employment, but it can be nothing more than a piece of paper that you paid for and you might even lose that job. So, researching the potential programme is vital and finding out if the education provider offering the programme has many years of success backing them.
MBA online learning is relatively new. Like most things in life, it will come with different choices. Should you choose an MBA learning program offered entirely online for flexibility and convenience or have your employer sponsor you for a classroom MBA programme that demands much more out of you? Will the company you work for believe that an online MBA is to be valued or does actual hands-on experience as part of the program really make the difference? You might want to start asking people in your HR department and/or present and potential employers. Your questions should have answers in the perhaps not-so-distant future.
