"Mortarboards away!"
A Celebration of Success at the Graduation Ceremony
On 16 November 2003, 4,500 Diploma, Bachelor's and Master's Degree graduates tossed their mortarboards in the air at the Graduation Ceremony jointly organized by Informatics and PurpleTrain.com.
The Ceremony, held at the Kallang Theatre, Singapore, saw a mixture of emotions - tears of joy and sighs of relief - from the pool of graduates who received their certificates from the respective University Partners and Validating Bodies in recognition and acknowledgement of their hard work and achievements. Camera flashes were aplenty throughout the ceremony as the graduates each savoured their moment of pride and glory when they each walked up on stage to a thunderous applause.
The morning session of the Ceremony was officiated by Guests-of-Honour Dr John E. Neal, University President, Ottawa University; and Professor Chris Whitaker, Pro Vice Chancellor (Business), RMIT University, did the honours of officiating the afternoon session.
Dr Neal officially declared the Ceremony open with his motivating speech and offered his heartiest congratulations to all graduates, encouraging them to savour the joy of this major accomplishment in their lives. He also extended the invitation for graduates to stay connected through the Alumni Association.
Professor Whitaker stated in his welcome speech, "Graduation also provides the opportunity for your parents, family and friends to share in the celebrations and for their significant contributions to your success to be recognized and acknowledged." He went on to encourage all graduates to serve as ambassadors through their future conduct and achievements.
PurpleTrain.com wishes all our graduates the very best in your future endeavors; we look forward to remaining a part of your pursuit of lifelong learning!

Recipient of First Class Honours Degree Succeeds through e-Learning via PurpleTrain.com in Canada
Irfan Akber from Canada started off by taking his NCC Advanced Diploma through PurpleTrain.com which allowed him to progress into the final year of the University of Portsmouth Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Computing programme. This allowed him to utilize and build upon his prior education to complete the course in a considerably short period of time. He did consider other online and campus based programmes at various colleges and universities but this particular programme was a perfect fit for him as it allowed him to leverage on his prior education and enroll in the final year of the programme
"It is a great achievement for me! I was only aiming for Second Upper Class actually. But the course allowed me to take modules at my own pace and I really took advantage of that, sometimes taking only one module per semester when they were more difficult. This is an excellent programme for those who have prior higher IT education and want to get into the final year to complete a Computing degree from a recognized UK university. E-Learning requires plenty of self-motivation and self-discipline! There is excellent support from the PurpleTrain.com facilitators and staff as well as fellow classmates but ultimately you still play the dual role of student and teacher yourself. You have to set your own goals and deadlines and work towards them."

First Class Honours for e-Learning Advocate in Hong Kong
Hidy embarked on her e-Learning path with PurpleTrain.com initially with the Advanced Diploma in Computing, upon completion of which she felt the urge to pursue further qualifications. Having enjoyed the flexibility and convenience so much, Hidy chose to carry on with the e-Learning route for her Bachelor's degree. E-Learning through PurpleTrain.com allowed Hidy to plan her study well without distracting her from her personal commitments. Hidy battled all odds to achieve her award. She remained focused in her studies and ignored all stereotypes of e-Learning being 'less practical than the traditional taught class' due to its online nature.
"This final year programme has allowed me to continue my studies at my own pace, and the beauty of this course is that I can really finish it in just ONE year! People have been judgmental and skeptical but I proved them all wrong! What e-Learning really gives is the powerful connection that gives no barrier to communicate with classmates all around the world anytime, anywhere. The interaction among the class was better than I could ever imagine, and I dare say, even stronger than that of traditional classes!"
Hidy Chan, Hong Kong

Professional Ice Hockey Player finds right Shooting Angle with e-Learning through PurpleTrain.com
In the sunny island of Singapore where it is virtually summer all year round, a country where temperatures hover around the mid-30s (degrees Celsius), Kevin Tan puts on layers of clothing and protective gear but still manages to keep cool.
Before you ask "WHAT?!", perhaps we should explain that Kevin is a professional ice hockey player. "It's fun to see people's reaction when I tell them that sure we have an ice ring in Singapore," says Kevin with a cheeky grin.
Being on the ice hockey national team and having to do shift work denies Kevin the opportunity to take up the normal learning mode of classroom study which has restricted fixed class timings. Kevin chose to take up the e-Learning route through PurpleTrain.com, which allows him the flexibility of planning his study schedule around his trainings.
"PurpleTrain.com is able to offer me a programme of my interest and most importantly, it is accredited. Being able to view the whole year's schedule before enrolling is a huge plus point as it allows me to plan both my work and study schedules in advance!" says Kevin who is in his final stretch of his Advanced Diploma in Computing, and upon completion, will embark on the Bachelor of Computing (Hons) degree programme offered by the University of Portsmouth.
Kevin knows that despite the benefits of e-Learning, there are some who may still have reservations. But to those who have chosen to give e-Learning their best shot, Kevin says, "We are on the pioneer of a new era - this is new age learning method and we should be proud of it. Not everyone has the nerves to try it nor the discipline to attack it. To all current e-Learners, WAY TO GO!"
How does Kevin strike a balance between intensive training sessions, studies and social commitments? "Good time management! It's pretty cool being able to study hard and 'attend class' from home. It allows me to be closer to my family and friends but you really have to be self-disciplined and have good time management."
Lest you think that the road to success came easily for Kevin, he's come across his fair share of obstacles as well. "There are some modules that are very practical in nature and without practical lessons, it can be difficult," Kevin shares. But that doesn't deter Kevin from finding a way around this so-called 'problem'. He reads and practices on his own and does constant checks with the facilitators until he fully understands. "I have to admit, the facilitators have been very patient with me! And they are fantastic - their responses are usually overnight!"
When Kevin is in neutral zone between trainings, he catches up on his lessons. In fact, he is often seen with a laptop even between trainings. That's the discipline of a sportsman for you! But sorry girls, this one's taken. Kevin's been in a stable relationship for four years. Awwww…..

E-Learning in Picturesque Pakistan!
Souhaibb Javed from Islamabad, Pakistan is your typical busy young urban professional with a hectic lifestyle. And like many other typical busy young urban professionals with hectic lifestyles, Souhaibb faced the same challenge of wanting to upgrade himself to remain competitive in the working environment but not having the luxury of time to do so.
For Souhaibb, a flexible study schedule was essential as he not only had hectic working schedules, but also often had to be involved in overseas assignments. Having had the aim to upgrade his educational capabilities since 2001, Souhaibb almost had to give it a miss as most courses were incompatible to his working schedule. "Most methods of learning required a student's physical appearance in class, something which I am not able to commit to. This predicament was eradicated by Informatics through e-Learning via PurpleTrain.com, a unique medium of instruction," comments Souhaibb.
"With PurpleTrain.com, I am able to connect to a classroom wherever I am in any part of the world! E-Learning with PurpleTrain.com has also enabled me to make many friends from all walks of life and various cultures. We're still in contact despite having moved on to do different modules," says Souhaibb who works as a Software Engineer / Technical Support Specialists.
Souhaibb embarked on the Postgraduate Diploma leading to the Master of Science in Strategic Business and Information Technology with the perception that it was going to be difficult as he was used to attending physical classes at education institutes for formal learning. Today he swears by the unique experience of e-Learning and finds the chat sessions and extensive assignments the most interesting factors. He also looks forward to implement the techniques he's learnt at a later stage in his career.
"Under normal circumstances, missing a lesson could cause great inconveniences but e-Learning through PurpleTrain.com provides me with all the requested immunity from attending classes under different conditions. I am able to check the chat logs to find out what happened during the classes I missed, which will eventually not affect my learning process," says Souhaibb who enjoys discussing current affairs, among other things, with the friends he's made through PurpleTrain.com.
Souhaibb is also full of praise for the PurpleTrain.com facilitators and their quick responses. "The facilitator-student interaction is really interesting. Whatever questions I might have, I can expect to receive a reply from the facilitators within 24 hours. That's just great!"
To those who wonder if e-Learning is the way to go for them, Souhaibb emphasizes on the importance of priority setting. "E-Learning through PurpleTrain.com, with the provision of complete freedom of work, is an ideal choice for busy executives who would like to study without the restrictions of classroom attendance. Honestly, it will not be easy to keep up with the study schedule but you have to keep working hard! I urge you to introduce PurpleTrain.com to your friends and motivate them to join you in your quest in continuing education!"
Souhaibb, we wish you all the best in your quest of pursuit of higher learning!

PurpleTrain.com Unravels the Myths of e-Learning!
Like it or not, not everyone is fully comfortable with the concept of e-Learning despite its abundant advantages. PurpleTrain.com has taken steps to address these misconceptions to offer you further reassurance.
Some common misconceptions of e-Learning include:
| Myth 1: | "E-Learning service providers are fly-by-night set-ups" |
| Truth: | Under the care of Dr Jonathan Britt, Honorary Chairman of the e-Learning Academy and Head of Technology Extended Campus, University of Portsmouth, the programme development team charts out long term strategic plans to ensure that PurpleTrain achieves academic excellence. Thus only programmes of exceptional quality are delivered via PurpleTrain.com. |
 |
| Myth 2: | "E-Learning courses are not recognised" |
| Truth: | PurpleTrain.com is committed to providing online courses that are subjected to the highest standards of academic governance. PurpleTrain.com courses are either validated or awarded by world-class Universities or internationally recognized awarding bodies including NCC Education, the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate or Informatics Academy. |
 |
| Myth 3: | "Students are left to struggle on their own" |
| Truth: | Understanding that a big percentage of our students are busy working adults whose multiple roles may possibly compromise on their commitment to their continuing education, our operational team offersround the clock administrative, technical, operational and counseling support to the students. Students may choose to request for assistance electronically through email or through the 24-hour Helpdesk at 9362 9292. |
 |
| Myth 4: | "There are a limited number of courses available" |
| Truth: | PurpleTrain.com offers a spectrum of over 700 courses from Diploma to Bachelor to Masters degree programmes as well as professional courses in Business or IT skills. Corporate users will find up-to-date professional courses to upgrade their skills and competencies and lifelong learners will find themselves pampered with choice with the variety of programmes. |
 |
| Myth 5: | "There is very little interaction between students and facilitators" |
| Truth: | Our experienced facilitators are not only academically qualified and bring with them substantial industry experience, they are also trained in e-facilitation. They take proactive measures to encourage active student participation through emails, discussion forums and net chats. |
 |
| Myth 6: | "E-Learning is just spoon-feeding" |
| Truth: | Students are given assignments which require them to draw upon the various concepts learnt as well as the invaluable knowledge gleaned through discussions with their peers. PurpleTrain.com facilitators take on the role as coaches to guide students and offer expert advice rather than furnish them with standard answers. |
 |
| Myth 7: | "E-Learning provides an easy way for students to cheat" |
| Truth: | PurpleTrain.com takes a serious view of cheating and plagiarism attempts. Through students' input in the discussion forums, our facilitators are trained to pick out individual students' comprehension level and style of writing and match that of the assignments submitted by them. |
 |
| Myth 8: | "E-Learning is troublesome" |
| Truth: | E-Learning actually gives students the flexibility of 'anytime, anywhere' learning - all they need is access to the Internet; it is made possible through any electronic device that allows Internet access. So you can interact with fellow students or posting up threads at discussion boards through your WAP-enabled mobile devices while relaxing over a coffee break! |
 |
| Myth 9: | "It is impossible to conduct proper examinations for cybercampus students" |
| Truth: | While there are some courses that are purely coursework-based, students will find that most courses have a certain percentage of assessments in the form of examinations. Examinations are proctored at centres readily accessible to students irregardless of where they are in the world. |
 |
| Myth 10: | "Students need broadband high-speed internet connections to do e-Learning" |
| Truth: | We have students from all over the world, some as far as countries in the African and European continents. Although it is an added advantage to have broadband and high speed internet connections, students who have basic dial-up connections can still enjoy the benefits of e-Learning. |
