EVC - Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What is the Difference between IVC and EVC?
IVC is a community created to assist full-time students in additional academic support, from downloading of reading materials to requesting for academic transcripts, which will minimize the queue time to get the same information from the service centre. It provides centre based services and after class support.

EVC – Executive Virtual Campus provides an excellent platform for adult learners on the part-time programmes to receive continuing education without having to physically attend all the face-to-face taught classes. Real-time online lectures will be conducted for some lessons of every module so that the frequency of having to physically travel to class can be reduced and students can attend virtual classes in the comfort of their homes. This platform is excellent for students who are geographically dispersed and traveling is a hassle, as well as working adults who are pressed for time.

Q. Is this EVC 24 hours 7 days a week?
Real-time online lectures are scheduled and synchronous i.e. attendance is same time but anywhere. The online resources, services and archived lectures are available 24 hours 7 days a week.

Q. How different is this EVC service from e-learning on PurpleTrain.com?
E-learning on PT is largely asynchronous except for the scheduled e-Chats where students have very focused discussions with their e-facilitators and peers. It is also a platform where they get to clarify their doubts. There are currently no real-time online lectures conducted for them. These online students are usually very independent and net-savvy learners. They also include adult learners who need to travel frequently for their work and have no time to attend taught classes. Web-based learning anytime anywhere is therefore the best mode of learning for them.

Q. How interactive is the virtual classroom?
The virtual classroom permits two way interactions between students and lecturer/co-presenters. It has full audio (send and receive) and video broadcast capabilities for all users. Moreover, this platform has the following features:

  1. A student can see the display of text, graphics, powerpoint slides and any multimedia files (video, flash, etc.) that the lecturer uses to explain his lessons.
  2. A virtual whiteboard permits him to “write” and “draw”.
  3. He can raise his hand to get permission to ask questions.
  4. He can get permission to become a co-presenter.
  5. He can join breakout sessions where he discusses issues with his peers before coming back to the classroom for their presentations.
  6. He can host a software application for sharing.
  7. He can send pacing and comprehension feedback to the lecturer.
  8. He can send a private message to the lecturer or co-presenters.

Q. What do I need to enjoy the interactivity offered by the virtual classroom?
The virtual classroom allows for real-time interaction as long as you have a speaker (for audio receipt of sound), microphone (for verbal interaction) and web-cam (for visual enhancement). These tools will enable your lecture to be simulated like a real classroom lecture environment.

Q. Is EVC video-conferencing?
EVC is not video conferencing. It is designed for virtual classroom delivery where there can be unlimited number of co-presenters and tools for breakouts, polling and grading.

Q. Can the online lecturer see all of the students online in any particular session?
The online lecturer will see a listing of all students who have logged into a particular session. He can literally see a student provided that particular student has a webcam installed at his computer.

Q. Can a few lecture sessions go on simultaneously?
Students taking the same module in a particular semester can log on simultaneously even through they come from different centres and different countries, as long as they have been given access to the session.

Q. How do I know the learning schedule for EVC?
The learning schedule for your online ‘live’ lectures will be determined by your Informatics centres and you will be notified of the schedule by your centre
