This unit introduces students to the advanced treatment of the concepts and techniques in systems development within an ecommerce environment.

On successful completion of this unit, students should be able to:

  1. Appraise different system development methodologies;
  2. Recommend the adoption of a particular methodology for a given problem domain

Pre-requisite knowledge:
Students attempting this unit should have a sound knowledge of basic system and systems analysis ideas to the level that they are able to carry out a full analysis of a given situation and document it in some appropriate fashion.

This unit highlights the importance of new technological developments in large scale data processing within business management.

On successful completion of this unit, students should be able to:

  1. Describe the role of contemporary managers in Information Technology.
  2. Outline the skills necessary to assist in the running of a large computer centre.

Electronic Commerce

Students learn the concepts of electronic commerce and its implications to business. They will explore popular models of ecommerce.

On successful completion of this unit, students should be able to:

  1. Judiciously apply the concept of e-Commerce to a business situation.
  2. Identify the requirements in terms of infrastructure, skills and resources for successful implementation of e-Commerce.
  3. Identify the security issues involved in implementing e-Commerce and suggest solutions to such problems.
  4. Develop e-Commerce interfaces following appropriate design guidelines

Strategies for Resource Conservation and Recovery

This unit introduces students to the planning process related for the deployment of materials based on differing manufacturing strategies and the environmental impact of by-products.

On successful completion of this unit, students should be able to:

  1. Evolve criteria for materials selection, maintenance of supply, use of scarce materials and their substitutes as well as criteria related to public attitudes.
  2. Assemble an economic case, related to contemporary manufacturing styles in the effective use of resources for by-product recovery, processing and re-manufacture.
  3. Formulate aims and targets for materials management strategies.

Operations and Quality Management

Students learn how to do analysis, design and control of production systems as well as the associated quality control and management of such systems.

  3. Apply financial analysis techniques to alternative strategic options making maximum use of data to focus on priority problems and direct effort within a company.
  4. Use statistical process control techniques.
  5. Apply the 'zero defect' philosophy based on the cost factors related to quality.
