Founded as Salem College in 1888, Salem International University is a private, independent, non-profit American higher education institution.

Salem College received its first charter from the State of West Virginia in December 1888 and offered its first term of instruction beginning in April 1889. Salem International University has also internationalised the curriculum and is continuing to explore ways of providing internships and expanding study abroad opportunities in Japan and Berlin.

Salem International University is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission, North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, 30 North LaSalle Street, Suite 2400, Chicago, Illinois 60602 and the West Virginia State Board of Education. The University is nationally accredited, through its Department of Management Studies, by the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and program to offer the Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration with specialisation in Accounting, International Business and Management. Its Equine Careers and Industry Management program is approved by the British Horse Society.
