The military principles of strategy that
have been developed and perfected over the centuries have direct applications
and implications for strategic thinking, both personally and corporately.
There are basically nine elements of military
strategy.
The objective
This refers to deciding in advance exactly what you are trying to accomplish.
What exactly your objective is. In previous experiences, 80 percent of
all problems in personal and corporate life come from a lack of clarity.
Clarity of objective precedes all other elements in strategic thinking.
Here are some questions that you can use
to focus and clarify your thinking:
"What are we trying to do?"
"How are we trying to do it?"
"What are our assumptions?"
"What if our assumptions were wrong?"
Having the courage to question your assumptions,
both spoken and unspoken, is a mark of the superior executive. Sometimes
individuals avoid questioning their assumptions for fear that they will
have to change their minds or do something other than what they want to
do. However, errant assumptions lie at the root of almost every failure.
The best way to root out these wrong assumptions is by carefully analysing
and discussing them, and then demanding proof or evidence that the assumptions
are valid.
Another method for clarifying objectives
is to project forward and look backward. Imagine that you have already
achieved the objective you are working toward. Project yourself forward
in your mind and then look back to the present moment. What do you see?
What changes could you make looking back in hindsight?
The final part of clarifying objectives has
to do with the reasons you want to achieve these objectives.
What are your values?
What are your basic operating principles?
What is it that you stand for
What is it that you won't stand for?
Why are you doing what you're doing?
The offensive
You must accept full responsibility for your situation and then take charge
and take action. All great breakthroughs, and breakouts from problem situations,
involve someone taking the plunge to decide to take aggressive, forward
action. The wonderful thing about this attitude of the offensive is that
it invariably leads to an outcome superior to that of withdrawal or retreat.
Look at your current situation. What are
the critical factors that will determine your success or failure? Once
you've decided on the one or two things that, if done well, can make a
real difference, launch yourself forward and get busy, take action, do
something. The real antidote to worry is systematic, purposeful action
in the direction of a clearly defined goal.
The mass
Concentrate your resources on your areas of greatest opportunity. One
of the most important habits for success is the habit of single-minded
concentration on one thing at a time.
Ask, "What
skills, talents and abilities do I have that account for my success in
life to date?" Only by concentrating your energies on the one or
two things that make a real difference can you fulfill your potential
as an executive or officer.
Ask, "What obstacles stand between me
and my goals and objectives?" List all the factors that appear as
obstacles in your environment. Write down your weak areas of competence.
Include factors within your corporate environment as well as factors outside
the corporation. Then organise the list in terms of priority. What one
obstacle, if it were removed, would move you rapidly toward accomplishing
your goals?
Think through what you are doing and then
concentrate on one thing, the most important thing, and stay with it until
it is complete. This one habit can change your entire future.
However, corporate survival in the real world
demands that you have the necessary qualifications to get ahead. Thus,
for busy executives, there is always the opportunity to take up further
education through e-Learning. The suite of higher education programmes
that are available on PurpleTrain.com covers areas in business as well
as IT. For example, the Master of Business Administration course from
Salem International University offers participants knowledge on how business
and management work in a global environment and it allows the students
to pick up valuable insights into the corporate world.
In line with the fast paced business world,
the SIU International MBA may be completed in less than two years which
allows participants to apply their knowledge in the realm of their corporate
world. With the vast potential of the Web, the programme is delivered
on-line which offers convenience and ease of access for travelling and
busy executives.
