General management skills and knowledge still pays dividends

Despite an economic downturn, MBA holders will ultimately find a good job more easily because of the versatility of the degree.

In any business climate, corporations must continue to operate, and their operations contain many tasks that require MBA skills. Most MBA graduates are generalists, managing everything from finance and budgets to marketing strategy and strategic planning. A general manager at a company may be one who manages multiple disciplines of finance, accounting, marketing, and manufacturing.

According to Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) experts, as managers progress within organizations, the technical expertise that helped them to obtain their first jobs often becomes less important. Their abilities to organize the work of others and help decide what course of action the organization should take to become more valuable are what counts.

Their point? An MBA degree equips the professional with all the skills he or she will need to make the leap from project manager to general manager.

Alternatives Abound

An MBA program doesn't take forever. Programs are typically two years in length, full-time. Part-time programs may take up to five to six years, depending on the number of courses taken per semester. By contrast, law school typically requires a commitment of three to four years on a full-time basis. Medical, dental, and veterinary schools take four years or more.

If you're not willing to put your life and career on hold to go back to graduate school full-time, there are abundant alternatives. Because so many MBA candidates are established professionals, many programs are designed especially for online and mid-career students.

Many universities now feature executive MBA programs. These curricula are designed for mid-career executives and professionals who wish to build on their present experience and skills.

MBAs Do Still Pay

MBA holders typically enjoy a salary jump of over 80 percent in as little as 20 months. The payoff is quick and big for a relatively small investment of time and money, and might be one of the best for any graduate degree available.

According to a 1998 study conducted by Jens Stephans, a professor at the University of Cincinnati's College of Business, the MBA degree typically pays for itself within five to eight years, including the two years spent in school.

What's even more appealing about the degree is its versatility. An MBA degree may be applied to most any industry, business, or discipline.

Whether you want to stay in your existing profession or shift to an entirely different career field, the degree can be adjusted to accommodate your goals and direction. So to get on the track that pays better in the long run, do consider an MBA through e-Learning awarded by the Salem International University based in West Virginia.
