Market Demand for Nurses

There is no shortage in the demand for nurses worldwide.

According to the American Federation State Country Municipal Employees, 'among all occupations, registered nurses have the largest projected 10-year job growth, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The demand for nurses in the year 2012 is expected to be 2.9 million, up from 2.3 million in 2002.The total job openings, including new jobs and replacing nurses who no longer are practicing, will be more than 1.1 million from 2002 to 2012.'

'In Canada, 50% of nurses employed today will retire within the next 15 years. Student classes will need to double from 5'000 to 10'000 a year to fill the gap. By 2016 however there will be an expected shortfall of 113'000 nurses.

Looking at Europe and considering the difference in size of the general population, we find similar shortfall statistics:

  • United Kingdom: 22'000
  • Denmark: 22'000
  • Germany: 13'000
  • Netherlands: 13'000
  • Switzerland: 3'000. '
